  Course Requirements
Activities and Assignments:
All activities and assignments are due as schedule. Any late assignments will be given ZERO (0). Vocabulary quizzes will be given each week. There will be NO make-up of examinations unless you have a medical excuse from a doctor. With medical verification, you must discuss test make-ups with me. Vocabulary quizzes CANNOT be made-up. If you come class late, while we are taking a vocabulary quiz, you will have to join in where we are - The instructor will not recap what you have missed. Student workbooks will be checked for completeness at this time. If workbooks are not turned in on time, you will be given a ZERO (0) for this assignment. It is student's responsible to check the assignment deadlines. The deadlines are found in last page of this syllabus.

Attendance:
Students are expected to attend each and every class session. Ten (10) points are awarded for attending a full class session. Any absence will result in a loss of 10 points for each class session missed. Leaving class early or coming into class late will result in a loss of 5 points for each class. Attendance is vital to your success because the instructor will demonstrate sign formations during class that will be used on tests. Because ASL is an interactive course, attendance is crucial. You are allowed to have one excused or unexcused absences. To define an excused absence, you must email or page the instructor BEFORE the class begins or have a medical written from your doctor and bring it to next class. Otherwise, it becomes an unexcused absence. Having one absence will result in an excessive absence notification. Two or more absences will automatically withdraw you from the course which is automatically failing the course. If you have a perfect attendance record including on time arrival and completing the entire class period, you will be awarded 20 bonus points on the final exam. The definition of Perfect Attendance is NOT: skipping any class period regardless medical excuses, family death or any crucial excuses.

Voice Policy:
All instruction and discussion in the classroom will be conducted in American Sign Language. Using VOICE will not be tolerated! Continued use of voice will result in removal from the class and you will incur an absence. Please use no voicing, mouthing of English words, or any other sign systems in class at any time. Interpreting for other students will not be allowed. If you do not understand, ASK! The purpose of this is to gain maximum usage of signing and receptive skills.

Assessments:
Please check class schedule for the dates of the tests and the final exam. Students who fail to take one of the tests shall be allowed to take that test at a later date, but shall be penalized one full letter grade from the test score. This policy shall be waived only with a signed form from a physician. Students who missed the final exam will automatically receive an F for the course.

Video Presentations:
Students will follow handout criteria as each presentation is assigned on the date in the syllabus. These presentations will be worth 100 points each. It is imperative for each student to follow the handout guidelines to set up the presentation. Failure to do so will affect the grade. A typewritten (native language) translation of your presentation is required on the date due in the syllabus. You will be penalized twenty-five (25) points for turning scripts in not typed. If you miss the due date of a presentation, you will automatically get a ZERO (0) on that assignment. WARNING: This course emphasizes using expressive sign language. Thus, if any videotape is evaluated and is found to lack in expressive sign language, the grade will be dropped one letter down, which is a ten (10) point deduction, and must be redone. The videotape must be VHS format, no 8-mm tape is accepted. Each presentation must be a separate videotape, with nothing else recorded on it. Be sure to write your full name on your videotape. The presentation MUST be in the beginning of the tape (all the way to the beginning of the tape, no exceptions). Failure to do so will result in a deduction of 25 points. The presentation must be done in isolation - no background distractions.

ASL Stories:
To demonstrate your expressive sign ability, you will type in English each ASL story in each unit. Refer to the syllabus for due dates. If you miss the due date of a story, you will automatically get a ZERO (0) on that assignment. The ASL Stories MUST be typed with one-inch margins with 10-point Arial or Roman Times font. You will be penalized 25 points for turning scripts in not typed.

Journal:
Journal is required from all students to encourage interaction with Deaf adults and/or children. Students will be informed of various activities involving Deaf people and be given the opportunity to interact with Deaf people from the Orlando area. The Journal MUST be typed with one-inch margins with 10-point Arial or Roman Times font. Questions must be included along with answers. If there are no questions, 25 points will be deducted. You must submit on time according to the syllabus deadline. Failure to do so will result in a ZERO. The due date for journal is one week after you interview a student. You must notify the instructor of the planned interview date.

Field Trip:
One Field Trip is mandatory for this course. The field trip will be delineated as deaf events, which must involve a large number of Deaf people gathered, such as one at the Center for Independent Living, Deaf Experience Association Inc., Slient Dinner, and so forth. The purpose of this is to interact with Deaf people and to develop communicative and receptive skills. The field trip guidelines will be handed out when the field trip is assigned. The Field Trip report MUST be typed with one-inch margins with 10-point Arial or Roman Times font and at least two (2) pages long. It must be submitted on time according to the syllabus. Failure to do so will result in a ZERO. Extra credit is awarded for those who completed more than two (2) Field Trips accompany with the instructor. The maximum number of Field Trips is three (3). The maximum awarded points are 25 points depending on the report. The due date for the Field Trip is one week after you attend the event. You must notify the instructor the date of your planned attend.

Phone and Pager:
Keep in mind that the instructor already has a policy that all electronic devices (except calculators) must be turned completely off (not on vibrate or silent mode). If a phone, pager, or PDA makes any noise or vibrates, the test is taken from the student at that point and the grade is given a ZERO (0) or if there is no test, it will count as an absence.
